THE SOUL URGE IS DERIVED BY FINDING THE SUM OF THE NUMBER VALUES OF THE VOWELS IN EACH NAME, REDUCING THIS SUM TO A SINGLE DIGIT OR MASTER NUMBER, THEN ADDING THE SUMS OF ALL THE NAMES TOGETHER AND REDUCING THAT TOTAL TO A SINGLE DIGIT OR MASTER NUMBER.
There is at least one vowel in every syllable.
A, E, I, O, U are always vowels. Their value, from the table on page 18, is:

I = 9

Y is sometimes a vowel. Its value is 7. Y is a vowel when there is no other vowel in a syllable.

Always add the numbers of the vowels of each name separately, then add these totals together. If you add the vowels of all the names together, you may end up with a master number that doesn't apply or lose a master number that should apply. For instance, in the name Carolyn Sylvia Young above, if the vowels are added together, you get 1+6 + 7 + 7 + 9+1 + 6 + 3 = 40 = 4 Soul Urge, and the 22 Master Number has been lost.
